Finding a Good Lasik Surgeon
Much like finding a general physician or Family Doctor; finding a Lasik Surgeon requires research. Making the decision to have Lasik surgery is a big choice. Making sure that you have the right surgeon can effect how your result turn out. A surgeon with more experience can give you a better result and you can be less likely to have complications with the surgery.
Lasik surgery is a delicate procedure and requires a special touch. The results of Lasik surgery are excellent. It can free a person with mild nearsightedness from wearing glasses or contacts. Below are some things to take into consideration when looking for a surgeon for Lasik Surgery:
Make sure the surgeon is sincere and has you best interest in mind- As with all doctors, specialists, and surgeons you need to know that the surgeon cares. You should feel comfortable with the surgeon you select and they are listening to you and will consider your feelings before, after, and during the procedure.
Know what type of Equipment the Surgeon uses- Now I know this one sounds a bit silly; however the type of equipment a surgeon uses can effect the outcome of the procedure. Making sure that the surgeon uses double sterile equipment is also important. When a surgeon does work on both eyes they should have two sets of equipment. This is a question you should ask before going into the procedure. Sometimes a single sterile kit is used. This means the same set is used for both eyes. This can cause infections, and other issues later.
How long they Trained- This is important because we all know that the more training a surgeon has the more qualified they would be. Finding out if their training was hands on may also give you an idea on how much experience they have as well. Learning from a class or book is a must; but it doesn’t compare to actually preforming the procedure.
Asking questions is the best way to determine whether the surgeon is right for you. Lasik surgery is a great benefit to many and making sure that you have found the right surgeon is very important. Never be afraid to ask questions. After all they are their to help you and your vision!

Law Enforcement Career – Introduction to Gangs
Street gangs are defined as a group of individuals, usually youth, banded together under a common identity for the purpose of carrying out persistent illegal activity. This activity may revolve around dealing narcotics, robbery, pimping, burglary, racketeering, extortion, vandalism, and the hostile defense of their turf from other gangs. The sorting and cataloging of gang members and the study of street gang culture is a whole branch of criminology all in itself.
The knowledge of street gang activity amongst the municipal police is often so intimate that they can read graffiti messages and know the street names and specialties of each member. Frequently they keep their ear cocked for activity within their neighborhood, and understand the significance of events in a light that makes little sense to those who don’t follow gang activities.
In North America, the primary cities which have significant gang activity are Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, and Detroit. However, any major city may play host to a gang.
Much research is done to study what conditions give rise to gangs. Most experts agree that the causes are a combination of impoverished neighborhoods, racial minorities, troubled homes, and youths who don’t fit in. Young men especially join street gangs to prove their machismo, give themselves a community sense of identity, defy authority within the “system”, and compensate for low self-esteem and feelings of being an outsider.
The associative signs of identity will vary in form but always be present. The gang members might wear clothing which matches in style, color, or detail, have the same tattoo, same hairstyle, or even a common piece of jewelry. Most gangs have a designated turf, which is their home area, or other places which they claim as their own, and also have an identifiable organization or hierarchy. Usually the leader will simply be the currently most senior member, and a pecking order chains down from there. It is also somewhat common for a gang to be based on a common idea of hatred for other ethnic groups or religions, or promotion of their own race or religion.
Some speculation has suggested that street gangs are also a natural byproduct of the inherent short-comings in any society. Particularly, gang members seem to crave structure. While they reject the rules of society they have their own tight, unbreakable code. While they disdain conforming to society, they will adhere to their own dress code. They have their own value system and honor code. Street gangs may simply be the underprivileged providing their own structure and order when they perceive chaos and disorganization elsewhere.
In dealing with a gang as a law enforcement professional, the best policy is to seek the mentoring of a peer who knows the gang’s history. Once in the presence of a familiar authority figure, a gang member may be more cooperative, as long as you aren’t asking them to rat out another member. It is because their allegiance is always stronger within their group than it ever will be to anyone else, a gang member’s word should never be trusted until you know all the facts surrounding a given case.
In some cases, gangs have become so strong that the influence of the police is effectively dulled. there are sections of divisions in Los Angeles, for instance, where police officers simply will not go unless it’s in force, with a whole convoy of squad cars going in at once. At this point, the line between a street gang and a terrorist organization grows very thin. A separate issue is the other varieties of gangs, such as prison gangs and biker gangs. Street gangs might become prison gangs when all the members are incarcerated at the same time, but mainly prison gangs form within prison by the association of previously unconnected individuals.
The Internet has given rise to a new, far more dangerous development, which is the formation of international street gangs. While it was previously a rare thing for gangs to have affiliations outside of their own few city blocks, today there are dozens of gangs with members in several cities and countries throughout the world. amongst others, they are tracked closely by the FBI. The parallel rise of international organized crime is no coincidence with this, and indeed connections between Internet crime and street crime with a common gang identity have been discovered.
It may be unsettling to think that what used to be a handful of rough boys in a neighborhood is now an international organization with it’s own web pages, but it’s an idea we all have to face. This kind of takes the zip out of all those “cyberpunk” novels we were reading back in the 1980′s when we were imagining what the new wired world would be like. It turns out the cyberpunk universe carries it’s own problems from the street punk universe… and isn’t nearly as much fun as we thought it would be.

The film also includes music by Jackson Browne.
What happens when the people we count on to hold us together…are barely holding it together themselves? Jonas Pate’s “Shrink” is a striking, fast-paced exposé of the “other” Hollywood, featuring folks living outside their comfort zone and the people who put them there. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts). Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills. Considering his present state of mind, is he ready for the real-life troubles of a young woman who loves the world of movies he has become so jaded by? At its core, Shrink is a study of control and our endless need for it, even when it grows increasingly impossible to obtain…

Buddhism and the West : Subsequent to a Friendly Encounter
It is estimated that there are now over 190,000 Buddhists in the United States. Most of these, however, are Americans of Chinese and Japanese origin who belong to the Pure Land Sect and are organized under the name The Buddhist Churches of America.1 The majority of these Churches, over fifty in number, are largely in Hawaii and on the West Coast. The second largest Japanese sect is Zen, the various groups of which include the First Zen Institute of America in New York City, the World Zen Center in Virginia and the Zen Mission Society in California. Among other Japanese groups are the San Francisco Nichiren Buddhist Church, the Chicago Jodo Mission, the Shingon Buddhist Church in Chicago and the Nichiren Shoshu of America (Soka Gakkai) in Los Angeles.
Though Buddhism in the States is predominantly Mahayana and Theravada missions are smaller in number, the study of Theravada Buddhism has become increasingly popular among Americans of European origin. Theravada Buddhists are also united into societies, centres, groups and Viharas. There are “Friends of Buddhism” groups in such cities as Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The American Buddhist Academy in New York City and other Buddhist groups by different names and in various places are also active in Buddhist study, propagation and, for a few organizations, training activities. According to the statistics available in 2512/1969, there were altogether about 254 Buddhist groups, centres, missions and societies, both Mahayana and Theravada, in the United States. Of these, about 84 were in Hawaii, while the other 170 were on the American subcontinent.
Like the Mahayana groups, a number of Theravada centres in the United States are not American organizations but activities of Asian Buddhists. The Washington Buddhist Vihara houses a Theravada mission from Ceylon and it has a plan to establish centres in the major cities and train American monks to staff them. Thai Buddhists organized the Theravada Buddhist Center in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, which later became known as Wat Thai. Beginning with this first Thai temple in America, there are now more than a dozen of Thai temples in the States.
In Europe, while the Buddhist Society of Great Britain is still the biggest Buddhist organization, a number of local associations have been founded in cities, towns and universities in various parts of many European countries. Sri Lankan Buddhists contribute to this development by support-ing their mission at the London Buddhist Vihara in England and the Dhammaduta Society (Buddhistisches Haus) in West Germany. Besides the Buddhapadipa Temple in London, which was officially opened by his Majesty the King of Thailand on August 1, 2509/1966, Thai Buddhists have developed missions in some other parts of Europe such as the Dham-masucharitanucharee Temple in Waalwijk in the Netherlands, which was later changed to Wat Buddharam, and the Vipassana Centre at Surrey in England.
In Australia, the Buddhist societies in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are incorporated under the Buddhist Federation of Australia. Of these societies, the New South Wales Society at Sydney is noted for its most active work. A Thai Buddhist mission was invited to Melbourne in 2517/ 1974 and a Thai Buddhist Vihara called Wat Buddharangsee was opened in Sydney in the latter part of the year 2518/1975.
Besides books, booklets and pamphlets, Buddhist journals and periodicals have made a great contribution to the spread of Buddhism internationally. A number of such publications issued by Buddhist groups and organizations in America, Europe and Asia have a world-wide circu-lation. “World Buddhism”, printed in Sri Lanka, and the WFB News Bulletin distributed from the WFB headquarters in Bangkok are probably the best known and most widely read Buddhist monthly periodicals. Other publications include the Vesak Sirisara, the Buddhist annual of the Sri Saddharmadana Samitiya in Sri Lanka; Visakha Puja, the annual publication of the Buddhist Association of Thailand; The Middle Way and the Friendly Way, quarterlies of the Buddhist Society and the Buddhapadipa Temple in London respectively; The Maha Bodhi Journal of the Maha Bodhi Society; Voice of Buddhism of the Buddhist Missionary Society in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; “Metta,” the journal of the Buddhist Federation of Australia; and The Golden Lotus, mimeographed magazine published in Philadelphia. It would not be practicable to name here all the Buddhist journals and periodicals issued in the various countries. In the United States alone, twenty-three Buddhist bulletins, newsletters, monthly magazines and annuals were on the list in 2512/1969.

The former head of UCLA’s cadaver program and a businessman were indicted Friday on eight felony counts involving black market sales of human body parts.
Henry Reid, the former director of UCLA’s willed body program, allegedly sold donated body parts to businessman Ernest Nelson, who then resold them to medical, pharmaceutical and hospital research companies.
“As a result, Ernest Nelson was able to supply over 20 of his clients with hundreds of body parts and received over $1 million for the supplied body parts,” according to the indictment.
Reid, 58, of Anaheim, and Nelson, 50, of Rancho Cucamonga pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles County Superior Court to single counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, grand theft and grand theft of personal property.
